This sign appears to advertise the J.R. Ries Grocery Store. In the 1905 City Directory a grocery store was operated at 2009 Penfield Ave. J.R. Ries was listed as proprietor. In the 1910 census (after the streets were renumbered and renamed), John R. Ries was listed as proprietor of a grocery store at 2223 Broadway — probably the same store. The sign appears to indicate his first name was actually Jonathan (Jno.).
Thank you so much for translating these ghost signs! I thought I spied another one on the north side of the Doane Building at 4th & Broadway, but if there was one there, it’s almost gone.
