Hi Bill – thanks for checking out Lorain 365! These old ethnic social clubs played important roles in the history of Lorain. So few of them exist anymore and their neighborhoods are nothing like they used to be.
Lots of problems in Lorain with old and abandoned buildings… You urgently need a program for remodeling all these neighborhoods. I hope Lorain has got already such a program. And I hope they rescue a lot of these buildings, because they are Lorain’s history.
Sounds like we need Super Georgia, Urban Planner, to set Lorain straight! I’m sure we can find you a suitable house or at least one you can work on 😉 These old ethnic social clubs served their neighborhoods well. And I’m with Bill, I wish these old buildings could tell their stories. All the celebrations and ceremonies that took place here, the laughter, the joy, the love these people had for each other and for this old city. If only there were a way to get it back…
Muley, there are some places in this city that should have been on that show about what happens to Earth after people cease to exist. The thing that gets me every time is how much the neighborhoods have changed. Just 20 years ago, there were nights when the UPC was the place to be.
As a kid back in the 60’s, we used to hold the doors open for revelers on new years eve for tips….and the place would be packed. We lived across the street and I don’t think the house is there anymore. 17th and Long Ave was a great neighborhood back then.
Thanks for sharing some of your memories with us, muley 🙂 Do you have any old photos of the area to share? After becoming more familiar with the area than I ever though I’d be (keeping an eye on the demolitions), I would enjoy seeing what the neighborhood looked like in the good old days 😎
We were talking at lunchtime and of all the active ethnic social clubs that existed in Lorain, we could only come up with 3 that are still open: Slovak Home, Croatian Club, and the Italian-American Veterans. A good number of the old club buildings are still standing, I think. I’m going to work on finding them.

It’s a shame when public buildings are abandoned. Imagine the stories these walls could tell.

My Momma, Tessie ran the kitchen at Polish American Citizens Club at E 28th St and Caroline Ave for over 25 years. Best fish fries in town…..Ever!!!

We have friends from Elyria who visit every July and they always bring some for us….got 2 more packs in the freezer. :o)
