New Book Depicts Lorain in its Heyday
Relive the past through photographer Willis Leiter’s historic real photo postcards
Through more than 200 vintage images, a new book entitled Lorain:
The Real Photo Postcards of Willis Leiter presents readers with the
opportunity to see their town’s history through the eyes of an artist.
A collaborative effort by five dedicated authors, Lorain: The Real
Photo Postcards of Willis Leiter is the newest addition to Arcadia
Publishing’s popular Images of America series and showcases the
best work of 20th century photographer Willis Leiter.
Between the years of 1908-1915, Willis Leiter carefully composed
and skillfully developed images of life in early Lorain. The authors
explain, “This is Lorain during its heyday- business booming,
citizens marching in parades, streetcars traveling up and down
Broadway and Willis Leiter was there capturing it all through his photographs.”
During this period, real photo postcards were extremely popular and
the Leiter Studio embraced this fad by transforming Leiter’s photos
into a medium for messages of love, thanks, joy, and sorrow. Equally
charged with emotion and energy, Lorain: The Real Photo Postcards
of Willis Leiter is a remarkable pictorial history book that depicts
what life was like in Lorain more than 100 years ago.
Highlights of Lorain: The Real Photo Postcards of Willis Leiter include:
– Legendary places that are long gone, such as Glen’s Beach, the
Loop, the shipyard, and so many others come alive within the pages of the book
– Leiter’s Studio was located on 657 Broadway in the building now occupied by Faroh’s Candy.
– A portion of the profits from the sale of the book are being donated to the Lorain Historical Society
