unknown former churches

Both of these former church buildings are located in South Lorain. Anyone know what churches they used to be?
The first one is now home to a new congregation [Iglesia Adventista Del 7th Dia] and the second is home to Vision Learning Center Daycare.

*Update in the comments: I posted this on Roger Brownson’s ‘Lorain, Ohio by Photos’ FB page [you should join if you haven’t already] and it was determined that the top church [on the NW corner of East 30th and Clinton] started out as St. John the Baptist. I don’t think we have reached a definitive answer on the second church yet. It sits on the NW corner of East 31st & Pearl, next door to Reidy Funeral Home.

    1. I posted this on Roger Brownson’s ‘Lorain, Ohio by Photos’ FB page [you should join if you haven’t already 🙂 ] and once I was able to convince folks that I knew where the buildings were located because I took the photos 🙂 , it was determined that the top church [on the NW corner of East 30th and Clinton] started out as St. John the Baptist. I don’t think we have reached a definitive answer on the second church yet. It sits on the NW corner of East 31st & Pearl, next door to Reidy Funeral Home.

  1. If the first church is on 32 nd & Pearl, it’s St.Vitus Croatian Catholic Church. It looks like the church I grew up going to. I think the other is St. Cyril & Methodius (spelling?).

  2. Yes there were two SS. Cyril and Methodius Churches – one is Orthodox and one was Roman Catholic. The one on 31/Globe was Roman Catholic (Slovenian), and the one on 31/Pearl is the Orthodox one.

SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church merged with St. Vitus and St. John to become St. Francis Cabrini on 57/Homewood in 2009 or 2010 when the diocese of Cleveland closed many parishes in the area. http://www.parishesonline.com/Scripts/HostedSites/Org.asp?ID=3176

SS. Cyril and Methodius Orthodox Church moved over to the west side on Meister/Reeves into the former St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church complex not too many years ago. http://oca.org/parishes/oca-bu-lorscm

    1. drdamwi – welcome to Lorain 365 and thank you very much for all the information and links! We lost some beautiful churches in the great church reorganization.

  3. I believe that I have a photo of the “red brick” church from in the late 1920s. My husband’s aunt and uncle were married there. I feel sure it’s the same one. Will look when I return to Lorain and post if it is the same one. It would probably have been a Hungarian church. The photo is a treasure as there were 31 girls in the wedding party. At the time, girls were invited to “walk in a wedding”. There are many many people in the photo, which is about 36 inches wide by about 8 inches high….Love having it.

    1. Hi Peggy! The red brick church used to be St. John’s and the other church was SS Cyril & Methodius. Please see drdamwi’s comment for more details 🙂

  4. The top red brick church is the former St. John the Baptist/Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Built in 1909. It was used until 1967 when the new St. John’s church was built on Homewood Dr.
The 2nd one is the former St. David Episcopal Church which closed and then was used by Sts. Cyril and Methodius Bulgarian Macedonian Church for many decades until it closed.
There is a book being sold at the Lorain Historical Society called ” Celebrations of Faith: A Century of Worship in Lorain County, Ohio ” which has multiple photos and descriptions of the many former and current churches in Lorain County. The book mentions these two former churches. It’s a great keepsake to have. I recommend it.

  5. The second picture was SS. Cyril and Methodius Macedono-Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Church. The church has since relocated to 3056 Reeves Ave, Lorain, OH 44052.
