When Laura was pregnant with Stella, they found 2 different defects combined. “Critical Aortic Stenosis with Evolving Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome”. Her aortic valve didn’t form correctly. Hers was so deformed that there was actually no hole to allow blood to flow through. Because of that, her left ventricle was not working correctly and it was pumping and pumping to get blood through and no blood was going through which caused it to build up all this scar tissue called EFE and virtually disappear. That’s when Boston Children’s Hospital took over and they had the in-utero surgery (AMAZING, right?!) that opened her aortic valve. It saved her left ventricle but destroyed her valves.
She had her first open heart surgery when she was just 18 months old and again when she was in Kindergarten but there were MANY hospitalizations and interventions between.
Her last check up wasn’t as positive as we all had hoped it would be so now she is headed for her third open heart surgery November 1st, 2017.
